OpenVSP, a parametric aircraft geometry tool, allows users to create a 3D model of an aircraft defined by common engineering parameters, that can then be processed into formats suitable for engineering analysis.

J.R. Gloudemans and others developed for NASA what we now know as the predecessors to OpenVSP in the beginning of the early 1990s. On January 10, 2012, NASA released OpenVSP as an open source project under the NASA Open Source Agreement (NOSA) version 1.3. Rob McDonald, professor of aerospace engineering at Cal Poly − San Luis Obispo, is currently leading the development. Both Gloudemans and McDonald speak to ArchiExpo e-Magazine about the software.
