Kamraj Domestic Terminal at Chennai International Airport

As a gateway to Southern India, Chennai sought a world-class terminal “conceived in a futuristic frame.”

Following a successful entry to an international design competition, Gensler and its design partners were selected to design the new terminal. The plan takes inspiration from the ancient Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, a model for intuitive wayfinding. The building’s sleek steel structure rises to a curved roof, forming a light, open and column-free space with expansive glass curtain walls. Lush tropical gardens bring to life the regional landscape and reference the indoor and hanging gardens that are a local tradition, authenticating and enriching the airport’s restorative passenger experience.
