Marine Osprey Crashes Near Japan

All aboard the aircraft were rescued after it went down in shallow water last night.

A U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey crashed in shallow water Monday night approximately 6 miles from the coast of Okinawa, Japan.

All five crewmembers aboard, members of the Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, were rescued, although the extent of their injuries is not yet clear, according to the Pentagon.

This is the first accident involving a military tiltrotor in 2016, but it’s the second Marine accident in the past week and the eighth loss this year. An F/A-18 Hornet, also from the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, crashed last Wednesday off the southeast coast of Japan. The pilot of the Hornet ejected before impact, but he was later pronounced dead.

All of the Marine Corps aircraft losses this year have occurred during training exercises.
