The trafficking of illegal or illicit substances is a growing threat, with trade routes—and specifically maritime containers—being the preferred transportation vehicles. This strategic choice by illicit networks is due to the current inability to scan containers on a global scale efficiently. The lack of specific and effective technology results in fewer than 5% of containers worldwide being inspected, creating an ideal scenario for the relatively easy transport of all kinds of contraband.

MION has developed VPSCAN with the sole purpose of enabling efficient, automatic, and fully non-intrusive container scanning, simply through the chemical analysis of air extracted from inside the container using proprietary ultra-sensitive technology. This technology allows for the detection of nearly any substance at realistic concealment levels within a matter of minutes.

Currently, VPSCAN is in its validation phase, with highly positive results in detecting drugs at major European customs points, confirming its potential to revolutionize security in maritime trade.
