Aecom to modernize Terminal E at Boston Logan Airport

Global infrastructure firm Aecom and Luis Vidal + architects have been chosen by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) to lead the modernization of Terminal E at Boston Logan International Airport, Massachusetts.

Aecom will provide full architectural and engineering design services to Massport for work on more than 400,000ft² of new and renovated terminal space.

Key program elements include significant renovations to the existing terminal, enhanced ticketing and international arrivals, a new consolidated passenger security checkpoint, airline clubs, baggage systems, concession space and a new multi-story central hall.

Terry Rookard, principal architect and senior vice president with Aecom architecture, said, “This project will elevate Massport’s reputation for providing a world-class passenger experience to its international passengers. As one of the busiest airports in the USA, Boston Logan will be prepared to meet customer expectation and demand well into the future.”

Spanish architect Luis Vidal said, “Elegance and welcoming are the two words that come to my mind when I think of Boston. When designing Massport’s extension to Terminal E, we wanted these words to become part of its DNA.”

The modernization program includes renovations to the existing international arrivals and customs hall, utilizing a combination of roof and window designs to maximize the use of natural light.

Intuitive wayfinding, spatial clarity and first-class hospitality will transform the arrival experience for those entering the country. The iconic roof, designed following the sun path, proposes two skylights facing north, in the form of eyelashes, protecting the interior from direct sun exposure.

On the south, the roof gently slopes down the façade to reveal a number of openings that face downtown Boston, offering departing passengers a last and memorable view of its skyline.

With an emphasis on efficiency and sustainability, Aecom and Luis Vidal will seek LEED Gold status for the terminal when complete.
