Aviation Redevelopment Expert Rafael Gonzalez Joins HNTB

Rafael Gonzalez joined HNTB Corp. as a senior program manager and associate vice president. Based in the firm’s office in the Empire State Building, Gonzalez leads construction management efforts for aviation programs in the New York City region.

“Rafael is nationally recognized for his airport redevelopment and construction management experience,” said Stephen Dilts, HNTB’s New York office leader and senior vice president. “His ability to establish strong partnering relationships within local business communities, as well as his skill in managing the successful completion of large projects in constrained urban environments, is highly valued by public agencies in the New York-area.”

Gonzalez has more than 25 years of construction management experience, including design-build projects in Mexico, California, Utah, Florida, Texas and Georgia. His work in Mexico included serving as deputy program manager for the $15 billion construction of the control tower and a terminal building at Mexico City International Airport. In the United States, his experience encompasses airport redevelopment for Salt Lake City International Airport and Tom Bradley International Airport in Los Angeles, as well as the expansion and modernization of San Diego International Airport’s Terminal Two, which received a LEED Platinum award from the United States Green Building Council, the first airport to achieve that recognition.

A graduate of Florida International University with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, Gonzalez is a member of the Construction Management Association of America.

HNTB plays an integral role in many of the region’s most important infrastructure programs, including construction manager for renewal and rehabilitation of multiple station facilities for New York City Transit; program manager for the redevelopment of John F. Kennedy International Airport; program manager for the Port Authority Bus Terminal redevelopment project; owner’s engineer for the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo (Tappan Zee) Bridge; lead structural designer of the Kosciuszko Bridge; technical consultant for the Goethals Bridge replacement project; and general engineering consultant for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, among others.
