San Francisco Opens New SkyTerrace Observation Area

It’s unusual for a US airport to develop new facilities for aircraft spotters, but San Francisco – one of California’s biggest and most interesting hubs – has done just that.

Today (14th Februray), the SkyTerrace was opened to the public. This outdoor observation area is atop Terminal 2 and gives you some amazing 180-degree views over the gate areas around the terminal and the intersection of the four runways at the airport.

“We are very excited to open an outdoor observation deck that everyone can enjoy,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “For many of us, coming to SFO with family to watch airplanes helped inspire our love for aviation. With the SkyTerrace, we hope to bring that same passion and excitement to new generations of families.”

The SkyTerrace is open daily from 7am to 10pm. Access is free. No ticket or boarding pass is required to access the SkyTerrace, but visitors will undergo a security check as they enter the space.

To reach it, head into Terminal 2 and go upstairs to the upper floors. The SkyTerrace is signposted, and is located before TSA checks.

Photography is possible, but through glass which surrounds the terrace.

The SkyTerrace cost the airport $6.3 million and is part of a wider redevelopment of the Terminal 2 area. It’s very welcome for the enthusiast community, and we’d love to hear your reports and see your pictures after using it!
