JetBlue’s new A220 features a sleek new cabin, mirroring the carrier’s latest fleet

JetBlue has just revealed the all-new onboard experience which will soon greet customers aboard the airline’s Airbus A220-300. It is the first of no less than 70 A220’s that JetBlue has on order, that was delivered to the airline’s home at John F. Kennedy International Airport Terminal 5 in New York on New Year’s Eve.

It’s the first aircraft for the carrier that features a 2 x 3 seating configuration, which will be welcome by pairs travelling together. The A220 features 140 Collins Meridian seats, which have been customised for the airline and feature an expanded width of 18.6 inches, the widest available for a single aisle aircraft and the widest in JetBlue’s fleet.

As well as width, the A220 features six rows of the carrier’s ‘Even More Space’ seating with additional legroom. All the seats feature adjustable headrests with premium Ultraleather, a softer, more breathable vegan leather material. For the passenger’s convenience, the airline has also delivered a custom designed seatback storage with mesh pockets, perfectly sized for water bottles and loose items and easy-to-reach in-seat power, featuring AC, USB-A, and USB-C ports.

Being JetBlue there is naturally inflight entertainment options with Thales AVANT and ViaSat-2 connectivity. That means JetBlue can continue to offer free high speed Fly-Fi on every plane, providing Customers with the ability to connect an unlimited number of devices and stream, surf, or chat during the entire flight, from gate to gate. But, if more traditional IFE is in order, passengers can enjoy it from their 10.1″ Hi-Def touchscreen.

However, where we feel the airline really shines is in its adoption of design details. More than ever airlines are going to have to fight hard to win back market share, and airlines that offer more coherent, branded, modern passenger experiences to the skies will build brand loyalty and help grow the heavily impacted North American passenger numbers of 2020.

In comparison to JetBlue’s other airbus planes, passengers will most likely notice the bigger which give a better sense of overall space, as well as larger overhead bins which will help reduce delays at the gate and speed up boarding. Some things never change however, and the A220 also features custom LED mood lighting to help transition passenger throughout different phases of flight and times of day.

The airline has also brought a couple of fun design elements to the skies. A redesigned front galley partition to enhance customer privacy near crew workspace which feature custom-created front and rear wall panel patterns, which incorporate dots and dashes from Morse code to spell out something fun. And those who need to visit one of the three restrooms during their flight might enjoy the subway tile patterns – a nod to being ‘New York’s Hometown Airline’ – as well as gender-neutral signage – unique to JetBlue.

Initially the A220 will begin flying this spring before entering scheduled service by mid-June on JetBlue’s Boston – Fort Lauderdale route. New cities, routes and markets will be evaluated in the future as more aircraft join the JetBlue fleet.
